4 Shocking Secrets About Fast Food

Today in Yahoo Health there is an interesting article on fast food, courtesy of MensHealth magazine.  They look at 4 popular fast food items and tell us what is inside them!

So, what has all this got to do with weight loss? Well, to put it simply, if you eat any of the above on the regular basis you can kiss the idea of losing weight goodbye forever. Just make sure you have a good life insurance policy to cover you when your internal organs start packing up in 20 years. Happy eating!

What’s in a Chicken McNugget?

Well, it’s not just chicken. It’s also such nonchicken-related stuff as water, wheat starch, dextrose, safflower oil, and sodium phosphates. The “meat” also contains something called autolyzed yeast extract. Yum!

What’s in a Wendy’s Frosty?

Instead of the traditional ice-cream and milk, which is all that is required, Wendy’s, like many other fast food chains, uses more than 10 different ingredients to make a “frosty”.

7 of the additional ingredients are sugars and 3 are oils. And this the the most shocking fact: Rather than a classic syrup, the “coffee syrup” would more accurately be described as a blend of water, high-fructose corn syrup, and propylene glycol, a laxative chemical that’s used as an emulsifier in food and a filler in electronic cigarettes.

What’s in a Filet-O-Fish?

Fish is healthy surely? Healthy fish, high protein, low fat, good for the brain and joints? Fish? Healthy? No.

Well, McD’s fillet-o-fish is made from Hoki, a bizarre fish that swims in the southern oceans. Does it taste good? Well this is what Wikipedia says about the Hoki:

The blue grenadier, hoki, blue hake, New Zealand whiptail, whiptail or whiptail hake, Macruronus novaezelandiae, is a merluccid hake of the family Merlucciidae  found around southern Australia and New Zealand at depths of between 10 and 1,000 m (33 and 3,300 ft). Its length is between 60 and 120 cm (24 and 47 in). The meat of the fish is white with very little taste.

Little taste? Well, that really does not matter because once it is covered in batter, that is not made from the recipe your nana used to use, and then covered in lashings of sugar laden sauce, it tastes OK!

What’s in my salami sandwich?

Mmmm, salami! Delicious! So, what is it exactly? Is it pork or beef? Or maybe lamb? Well, then answer is, it depends on how lucky you are! Salami is made from the left over bits of “meat” that are found kicking around on the slaughterhouse floor. It could really be anything. Best you do not ask really.
